About Us
The Bowmanville Toastmasters Club received its Charter from Toastmasters International on November 12, 1987, the same year that the first Toastmasters Club was started in Moskau, Russia.
How did we get to this point? A handful of Oshawa Toastmasters were instrumental in laying the foundation for our club. The first demonstration meeting in March 1986 at the Port Darlington Marina aroused less interest than we had hoped, but the second one in September, held at the Trinity United Church, was very well attended. We named our club the Bowmanville Toastmasters Club and elected the first executive. Club meetings were moved to the Lions Centre (now the Clarington Older Adult Centre). In the Fall of 1990, the club moved to the Parish Hall of St. John’s Anglican Church and in 1996, to the Ontario Power Generation Darlington Nuclear Information Centre. After September 11, 2001, we relocated to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at the corner of Hwy 2 and Lambs Rd.
Of the original twenty Charter members, two members are still active in our club.
Toastmasters International encourages clubs to publish club newsletters and in April 1990, the first of four one-page issues of The Bowmanville Toastmasters Club Newsletter was published. The newsletter was later named People in Action and was issued monthly. The publication grew to four pages starting in September 1997. In 2004, the publication was replaced by this website.
